About James Beard

James Andrew Beard, born on May 5, 1903, in Portland, Oregon, was raised in a household where his mother, an independent English woman passionate about food, ran a boarding house. His father worked at Portland’s Customs House. Summers at the beach in Gearhart, Oregon, inspired a love for fresh, local ingredients and laid the foundation for his culinary philosophy.
